Prediction: Real Madrid vs Chelsea in Champions League quaterfinal

Prediction for the first leg quarterfinal match of the Champions League between Real Madrid and Chelsea on April 12th.

Real Madrid have had a week of ups and downs. They convincingly defeated Barcelona in the Copa del Rey, but three days later suffered a 2-3 loss to Villareal. However, in the loss to Villareal, coach Carlo Ancelotti decided to rest midfield stalwarts Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Eduardo Camavinga on the bench.

This was clearly a move to preserve energy for the first leg quarterfinal match against Chelsea in the Champions League. This is the number one goal for the Spanish giants for the remainder of the season, as their chances of competing for the La Liga title are almost non-existent.

Playing at home, Real Madrid are even more difficult to stop at the prestigious European stage. Since their loss to CSKA Moscow in December 2018, “Los Blancos” have always found a way to score at the Bernabeu. In their last five Champions League matches at home, Real Madrid have won all of them.

In contrast to the dominant statistics of the hosts, Chelsea travel to Spain with an unsettled mentality. After sacking coach Graham Potter, “The Blues” have not been able to improve their form. In their last two matches, they drew 0-0 with Liverpool and lost 0-1 to Wolves. Chelsea’s play lacks creativity and inspiration. The likes of Mason Mount, Pulisic, Felix, or Kai Havertz have become too clumsy when they lack confidence.

In terms of squad strength, Real Madrid are also superior to their opponents. The medical room at the Bernabeu only has to take care of Ferland Mendy, who suffered a thigh injury last week.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s injury list is still very long with Armando Broja, Thiago Silva, Mount, and Cesar Azpilicueta. In addition, players Benoit Badiashile, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Noni Madueke, and Fofana were not registered in “The Blues” Champions League squad.
