Real Madrid record broken in defeat against Girona

Real Madrid suffered a 2-4 defeat against Girona in an away game in round 31 of La Liga, and they are almost giving up in the race for the La Liga championship alongside Barcelona.

After a win against Celta Vigo, Real Madrid were determined to beat Girona to keep their hopes alive of catching up with Barcelona. Girona is a team from Catalonia (Barcelona’s neighbor) and has been impressive in La Liga this year as they are in the group competing for a spot in the Europa League.

Coach Ancelotti fielded a strong team with Valverde, Kroos, Modric in midfield while Asensio, Rodrygo Vinicius were responsible for scoring goals. Main striker Benzema was on the bench.

Real Madrid did not start well and made mistakes in defense. In the 12th minute, Valentin Castellanos scored the first goal for Girona with a precise header from a left-wing cross by Miguel Gutierrez.

In a surprising turn of events, Castellanos won a high-speed aerial battle with Eder Militao in a quick counter-attack in the 24th minute and then coolly finished to beat goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, giving Girona a 2-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, Real Madrid’s hopes of getting points were reignited when Vinicius reduced the deficit to 1-2 with a close-range header. The first half ended with the advantage leaning towards the home team from Catalonia.

At the start of the second half, Real Madrid conceded a stunning goal in the first minute. Castellanos completed his hat-trick with a composed finish after receiving a low cross from the right-wing by Yan Couto, making it 3-1 for the home team.

The 24-year-old striker continued to show his scoring prowess by making it 4-1 in the 62nd minute with a close-range shot. Castellanos entered the history books as one of the few players to score four goals in a game against Real Madrid.

Real Madrid could only reduce the score to 2-4 thanks to Lucas Vazquez’s goal in the 85th minute. With this away loss to Girona, Real Madrid is now 11 points behind the league leaders Barcelona, but Ancelotti’s team has played one more game, and their chances of winning La Liga are truly fragile.
