Mbappe and Messi help PSG take a step closer to Ligue 1 title
The Mbappe-Messi duo shone as they helped Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secure a 3-1 victory over second-placed Lens, widening their lead at the top of Ligue 1 to 9 points.
Ahead of the 31st round of Ligue 1, PSG faced pressure from second-placed Lens as the gap between them was only 6 points. A defeat would have reduced their lead to just 3 points with many rounds remaining.
Therefore, PSG started cautiously as they hosted Lens at home in Parc des Princes. While the match was still balanced, Lens unexpectedly had to play with ten men after Salis Abdul Samed’s rough tackle on Hakimi earned him a red card from the referee in the 19th minute.
PSG quickly capitalized on the one-man advantage, with Kylian Mbappe scoring the opening goal in the 31st minute. Mbappe elegantly combined with his teammate before turning in the box and firing a shot past goalkeeper Samba.
Just 6 minutes later, Vitinha doubled the lead for the home team with a powerful shot from outside the box.
In the 40th minute, the score became 3-0 when Messi beautifully assisted Mbappe before unleashing a shot that found the bottom corner of the net, leaving Samba with no chance to save it.
In the second half, PSG played less confidently and allowed Lens to score a goal, reducing the score to 3-1. In the 59th minute, Fabian handled the ball inside the box, giving Lens a penalty. Frankowski scored from the spot to make it 3-1.
After that, Lens constantly threatened PSG’s goal with Openda’s explosiveness, but goalkeeper Donnarumma stood firm. In the end, PSG defeated Lens 3-1.
This victory helped PSG maintain their position at the top of the Ligue 1 standings and increase their lead over Lens to 9 points. With what he has shown, Messi will continue to collect more team titles after winning the World Cup 2022 by aiming for the highest level of French football this season.
