Mbappé and Messi combine as leader PSG wins 3-0 over in Ligue 1
The star duo of Messi and Mbappe both scored and assisted goals to help Paris Saint Germain (PSG) secure a comfortable 3-0 victory over second-placed Marseille and solidify their position at the top of Ligue 1.
Following their 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 last week, Christophe Galtier’s side faced a crucial match in the 25th round of Ligue 1 against Marseille, who were five points behind them in the standings.
Messi and Mbappe both started the match, while Neymar remained sidelined due to injury. Despite playing at home, Marseille displayed confidence by pressing high from the start.
In the first 20 minutes, the hosts created several chances in front of Donnarumma’s goal, but Nuno Tavares missed two good opportunities from inside the box.
In the 25th minute, PSG unexpectedly took the lead thanks to a beautiful team play from Vitinha, Messi, and Mbappe. Vitinha won the ball in midfield and quickly passed it to Messi. Although Mbappe was on the left flank at the time, he quickly burst into the center to receive Messi’s through ball and then scored a decisive goal to beat goalkeeper Pau Lopez.
Four minutes later, it was Mbappe’s turn to provide an exquisite assist for Messi to score. The French forward dribbled down the left wing and then passed across the box for Messi to easily tap in and double PSG’s lead.
Leading by two goals allowed PSG to play more comfortably, and they could have scored two or three more goals, but Messi, Mbappe, and Marquinhos all missed their chances to convert.
In the second half, Marseille had to push forward to try to score and reduce the deficit, but they quickly conceded the third goal. In the 55th minute, Messi cleverly passed to Mbappe to beat the offside trap and score a powerful volley past Lopez.
With a 3-0 victory, PSG extended their lead over Marseille to eight points at the top of Ligue 1 and can now focus on the second leg of their Round of 16 Champions League match against Bayern Munich.
