Liverpool set a 7-0 biggest win against Man United
Man Utd suffered a humiliating 0-7 defeat at Anfield in the 26th round of the Premier League, conceding 6 goals in the second half.
It was hard to imagine that Man Utd would lose 0-7 to Liverpool. Although Man Utd’s recent form has been very good, the team coached by Ten Hag played well in the first 45 minutes but too many silly mistakes in the second half led to a shameful defeat for the “Red Devils” on the opponent’s ground.
Man Utd completely lacked fighting spirit in the second half, many players played carelessly, causing trouble for their team. Coach Ten Hag also did not have a clear game plan and substitutions. The changes made by the Dutch strategist did not improve Man Utd’s performance; they continued to decline and eventually suffered the heaviest defeat in Premier League history.
Liverpool’s victory was marked by four individuals, including Gakpo, Nunez, and Salah, each with a brace, and Firmino with a goal. With three more points, Liverpool rose to fifth place with 42 points and officially returned to the Top 4 race of the Premier League. The Kop is currently only 3 points behind the fourth-placed Tottenham but has played one game less. Despite the defeat, Man Utd still stands third with 49 points.
Liverpool started fast at home, Klopp’s squad pushed up the tempo, and actively pressed their opponent. In the 2nd minute, Elliott made the first shot of the match, from the right inside the penalty area, the ball bounced off a Man Utd player.
Although Liverpool dominated strongly in the early minutes, their high-speed attacks did not penetrate Man Utd’s defense. In the 9th minute, Man Utd had their first shot on target, Dalot accurately crossed the ball for Fernandes to head from the left inside the penalty area, but the ball went over the Liverpool goal.
Man Utd had less ball possession, and the away team also had fewer shots than Liverpool. However, their accuracy in the shooting was higher, making goalkeeper Alisson have to play very focused. In the first 7 shots, Liverpool did not hit the target of the away team. However, in the 8th shot, Liverpool scored.
In the 42nd minute, Robertson drew Dalot to the left sideline, Fred was not in the right position to block Gakpo’s space, allowing his teammate’s precise pass to find him. The Dutch player penetrated the penalty area, dodged Varane, and shot into the right corner of the goal, making De Gea stand still. A beautiful goal by Gakpo.
In the second half, two minutes in, Man Utd conceded their second goal. It started with a misplaced pass by Shaw, followed by a series of unsuccessful clearances by the away team’s players. Finally, Shaw inadvertently blocked Salah’s cross, creating an opportunity for Elliott to deliver a favorable cross for Nunez to score from 5 meters.
Three minutes later, Liverpool scored their third goal. In the 50th minute, Salah received the ball on the right side during a quick counter-attack. The Egyptian player dribbled past Martinez with continuous feints before passing the ball to Gakpo, who scored from a narrow-angle on the right side. Shaw was too focused on Salah and did not notice Gakpo’s run.
The three goals caused the Man Utd players to lose confidence. Their attacks lacked sharpness, and their defense was weak. In the 66th minute, Antony’s carelessness in losing the ball allowed Liverpool to launch a quick counter-attack. While the Liverpool players rushed forward, Antony stood still as if he were not involved. Then, the same scenario repeated with the Man Utd defense, who cleared the ball haphazardly to Salah. With a powerful right-footed flick, Salah placed the ball into the top left corner, raising the score to 4-0.
Man Utd was no longer alert in defense, while Liverpool’s desire to score remained intense. In the 75th minute, Man Utd’s defense was too deep and did not pay attention to the Liverpool players behind them. Henderson delivered a perfect cross for Nunez to score from around 5 meters, raising the score to 5-0 for the home team.
After the fifth goal, Ten Hag decided to substitute Malacia for Martinez, so Shaw moved to center back. However, Shaw continued to make mistakes. In the 83rd minute, Shaw’s clearance hit a Liverpool player’s leg and bounced back to Salah, who easily scored from around 5 meters. This goal made Salah the greatest goalscorer in Liverpool’s history.
In the 88th minute, Liverpool organized another attack and easily tore apart Man Utd’s defense, just as they did before. Firmino scored from a narrow-angle on the right side, sending the ball past De Gea into the net. Dalot ran back to help defend, but somehow he stood too deep in the goal, so when he cleared the ball, Liverpool scored again.
After the seventh goal, Liverpool continued to play fiercely. Man Utd was fortunate not to concede a penalty in the final minutes of the game, which prevented them from conceding more goals. However, the 0-7 loss is still a big stain in Man Utd’s history.
