Kylian Mbappe to become the new France Captain
Mbappe has been chosen as the captain of the French national team to replace goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
After the end of the 2022 World Cup, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris retired from the French national team. According to sources from L’Equipe, coach Didier Deschamps decided to give the captain’s armband of the national team to Mbappe in the international matches in March.
Coach Deschamps considered two options, Mbappe and Griezmann, for the captaincy. After speaking with the members of the French national team, he decided to entrust this responsibility to the 24-year-old PSG forward.
In the past, Mbappe has never held the captain’s armband for the French national team, while Griezmann held this role in September 2022. Recently, when asked who would take over the captain’s armband of the French national team, Hugo Lloris shared: “There is a player who is increasingly asserting his importance in the team.
He not only possesses qualities on the pitch but also has a voice in the locker room. That person is Mbappe.”
Mbappe has shown great influence in the French national team over the past 5 years. He was an important factor in helping Les Bleus reach the World Cup final twice. They won the World Cup in 2018 and were runners-up in the 2022 World Cup.
Although only 24 years old, Mbappe has played 66 times for the French national team and scored 36 goals. This forward has won two individual awards at the World Cup. In 2018, he was chosen as the Best Young Player. In the tournament 4 years later, the 1998-born striker won the Golden Boot with 8 goals.
In addition to choosing the captain’s armband, Coach Deschamps decided to let goalkeeper Mike Maignan of AC Milan become the number one goalkeeper replacing Hugo Lloris. However, this choice is only temporary.
The AC Milan goalkeeper has to compete with Alphonse Areola and Brice Samba. Based on the performance of the goalkeepers in the two international matches in March and June, Coach Deschamps will make the final decision.
According to the schedule, the French national team will have two matches against the Netherlands and Ireland in the Euro 2024 qualifiers on March 25 and 28.
