Haaland equals incredible Thierry Henry record
Despite being denied a goal in the 1-1 draw between Manchester City and Brighton, forward Erling Haaland still made history in the Premier League with his assist for Phil Foden’s goal.
In their away match against Brighton in the rescheduled round 32 of the Premier League, Manchester City took the lead in the 25th minute with a swift counter-attack from midfield.
Erling Haaland made a run down the right wing after receiving a through pass from his teammate. Despite being in a face-to-face situation with the goalkeeper, the Norwegian striker chose to pass the ball across for Phil Foden to score the opening goal.
With this assist, Haaland has contributed to 44 goals in the Premier League this season (36 goals, 8 assists), equaling the record set by Thierry Henry, a legendary player, in the 2002/03 season (24 goals, 20 assists) for a 38-match season. Haaland could have even broken Henry’s record if his goal in the 72nd minute hadn’t been disallowed by VAR.
However, the 2000-born striker still has one more match to surpass the French legend. In the final round, Matchday 38, Manchester City will bid farewell to the season with an away match against Brentford.
Manager Pep Guardiola also reacted strongly, receiving a yellow card from the referee, when Haaland’s goal was disallowed. Prior to that, referee Simon Hooper disallowed Haaland’s goal, considering that he had committed a shirt-pulling foul against Levi Colwill before leaping high to score a header against Brighton.
“Please review that situation. If that’s a foul, then every action against Erling is also a foul,” expressed Pep Guardiola.
“This is a match that Manchester City had to play after celebrating their Premier League championship in a grand manner. We still played well, and that’s why we were champions before this match.
We showcased what we do with and without the ball. I didn’t see any decrease in our intensity and ideas. They had chances, we had chances, we scored goals, they scored goals.
Both teams wanted the ball, both teams wanted to apply pressure. The goalkeeper is a fundamental element in this match,” Pep Guardiola added.
