Arsenal give up late goal in 2-2 draw with Liverpool
Despite Salah missing a penalty, Liverpool managed to equalize 2-2 near the end of the match to force Arsenal to share points in the 30th round of the Premier League.
Arsenal had a dream start in the highlight match of the round, leading two goals after just 28 minutes of play. Martinelli opened the scoring in the 8th minute, and 20 minutes later, Jesus scored to extend the away team’s lead to 2-0. However, Liverpool did not accept defeat at home. Salah reduced the score to 1-2 in the 42nd minute, giving Anfield hope of getting points. After nine minutes of the second half, Salah had a chance to equalize when he took a penalty, but unfortunately, he missed.
It was not until the 87th minute that Liverpool found an equalizer from Firmino’s goal. In the remaining short time, Liverpool attacked fiercely, making Arsenal live in fear. Twice, Ramsdale made incredible saves to help the away team avoid conceding the third goal, thus earning one point.
With only one point, Arsenal reached 73 points after 30 rounds, six points ahead of Man City. Arsenal’s top position is no longer secure as they still have one more game than the defending champion and a difficult away match at Etihad on April 27. With a better goal difference than Arsenal, Man City has a great chance to successfully defend their championship.
Arsenal players started strong at Anfield. In the 8th minute, Martinelli rushed forward in the center and accidentally received the ball as his teammate’s pass hit the opponent’s foot and bounced back. The Brazilian player’s speed caught Liverpool’s defense off guard, and he quickly shot the ball past Alisson to score the opening goal of the match.
Liverpool attacked in search of an equalizer, but before the home team could score, they conceded a second goal. In the 28th minute, Martinelli cut in from the right wing of the home team, silently rushed to receive the ball and accurately crossed it inside for Jesus to head the ball into the net.
The two goals conceded at home were a real blow for Liverpool. The home team rose strongly, and in the 42nd minute, Henderson’s shot from the center of the penalty area was not good. It was a shot, but the ball went wide to the right. However, Salah was in the right place to tap the ball into the net, reducing the score to 1-2.
Seven minutes after the start of the second half, Liverpool received a penalty when Jota was fouled inside the penalty area. Salah took responsibility for the penalty. The Egyptian player made Ramsdale unable to anticipate the angle of the shot, but the ball went wide of the left post.
In the second half, Arsenal did not play as well as they did in the first half. The away team was under great pressure from the home team, so they mainly focused on defense. On the attacking front, Arsenal were almost harmless. In the 80th minute, Nunez had a ball face-to-face with Ramsdale but was unable to beat the opponent.
In the 87th minute, Alexander-Arnold overtook Zinchenko on the right wing, infiltrated the penalty area, and accurately crossed the ball for Firmino to head the ball near the left post, equalizing the score 2-2.
The opportunity for victory opened up for Liverpool thanks to their good psychological advantage, and the home team continued to increase pressure in the remaining minutes. In the 90+5th minute, Ramsdale shone with a diving save to block Salah’s shot. One minute later, Arsenal’s defense also shone with a ball clearance on the goal line after Konate’s header. Thanks to Ramsdale’s excellent performance, Arsenal left Anfield with one point.
