Liverpool losing 0-1 to Real Madrid in Champions League round 16
Liverpool failed to create a surprise when losing 0-1 to Real Madrid at Bernabeu in the second leg. After two matches in the round of 16 of the Champions League, Liverpool lost with a total score of 2-6.
Having lost 2-5 to Real Madrid at Anfield in the first leg, Liverpool was determined to shock at Bernabeu. Coach Klopp used an attacking lineup with Salah, Gakpo, and Nunez on the front line.
On the Real Madrid side, Coach Ancelotti used a more cautious lineup with Camavinga, Kroos, Valverde, and Modric playing in the midfield to support the striking pair of Vinicius and Benzema. The match was played at a high pace from the beginning.
In a situation where they had nothing to lose, Liverpool quickly pushed up their team to find a goal and had an opportunity early on. In the 9th minute, Darwin Nunez failed to beat Thibaut Courtois with a very fast shot from the edge of the penalty area.
In the following minutes, the match was quite open, and both teams pushed up their line. Real Madrid created more dangerous opportunities during the period between the first half of the match.
In the 14th minute, goalkeeper Alisson had a fantastic save with a close-range shot from Vinicius. The Brazilian goalkeeper continued to play excellently, touching the ball after Camavinga’s “cannon shot” from 30 meters, putting the ball into the correct crossbar in the 20th minute.
Liverpool also responded continuously in the second half of the first half. Due to Mohamed Salah being sealed off, two strikers Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez continuously shot from outside the penalty area, but could not beat goalkeeper Courtois.
Despite having many opportunities in the first half, both Real Madrid and Liverpool could not take advantage of them and had to accept a 0-0 draw. In the second half, the home team Real Madrid had a better start than the visiting Liverpool.
Goalkeeper Alisson continued to play excellently, rejecting the goals of Federico Valverde or Benzema after fantastic reflexes. Liverpool had continuous changes in the attack line in the second half, but Klopp’s squad still played blocked.
The highlight of the match came in the 78th minute, when Camavinga made an accurate pass to Benzema for the French player to cooperate and put Vinicius in a favorable position, but the shot of the Brazilian striker was missed.
Vinicius tried to chase the ball back and set up a reverse pass for Benzema to make a precise chip shot from 6 meters, securing a 1-0 victory for the home team.
Liverpool played less sharp in the final 10 minutes and accepted a 0-1 loss at Bernabeu, while also losing 2-6 after two matches in the round of 16. Real Madrid advanced to the quarterfinals of the Champions League impressively and nurtured hopes of defending the championship in the most prestigious tournament in Europe.
