Bayern Munich wins 11th straight Bundesliga title

Borussia Dortmund held a huge advantage to win this season’s Bundesliga title as they entered the final round, thanks to a 2-point lead over second-placed Bayern Munich and welcomed a Mainz 05 team that had lost its motivation to compete this season.

If they had won, Dortmund would have become champions regardless of the result of the simultaneous match between Bayern Munich and Koln. However, the battle for the Bundesliga title in the final round was incredibly dramatic and surprising.

Despite the home advantage, Dortmund let Mainz lead by 2 goals for 2/3 of the match. The yellow and black team managed to score a goal to reduce the deficit to 1-2 and received good news at the same time that Bayern Munich was being held to a 1-1 draw by Koln, meaning the title would still belong to Dortmund no matter how many goals they conceded.

However, substitute striker Musiala unexpectedly helped Bayern Munich regain the lead with a goal in the 89th minute and helped “Die Roten” (The Reds) reclaim the top spot in the Bundesliga. At 90+6 minutes, Dortmund managed to score a goal to draw 2-2 thanks to Haller’s effort, equalling Bayern in points after 34 rounds (both with 71 points).

However, the draw still left Dortmund bitterly watching Bayern Munich crowned champions due to a superior goal difference. The victory over Koln gave Bayern Munich their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title.

Coach Thomas Tuchel was also fortunate to win the Bundesliga title in his first season leading Bayern Munich, replacing the previously sacked coach Julian Nagelsmann in the final stage of the season.

Back to the final round of the Bundesliga, just at the 15th minute, the home team Dortmund surprisingly allowed guest team Mainz 05 to take the lead. From a corner kick on the left, Olsen stormed in with a powerful header at the near post, which goalkeeper Kobel couldn’t block.

However, only 4 minutes later, Dortmund faced a great opportunity to equalize 1-1 when they were awarded a penalty after a foul in the box by the visiting team’s defender on Guerreiro. Regrettably, striker Sebastien Haller made a weak shot from the spot and failed to beat goalkeeper Dahmen.

Haller’s miss made Dortmund pay as they conceded a second goal. At the 24th minute, Lee Jae Sung swung a brilliant cross from the left, and Onisiwo headed it high, leaving goalkeeper Kobel helpless as the ball flew into the net.

Dortmund players were extremely disappointed as, in the simultaneous match, Bayern Munich had taken the lead over Koln after Gnabry’s 8th-minute goal and maintained strong pressure on the home team’s defense.

Dortmund went into halftime with a heavy sense of disappointment, trailing by two goals. However, the home team showed immense determination in the second half by pushing high and dominating offensively against the visitors.

At the 69th minute, in a chaotic situation in front of the box, Reyna played a one-two with Guerreiro who decided to shoot right away. The ball went all the way to the post and into the net.

Dortmund’s joy was doubled when, in the simultaneous match, Bayern Munich unexpectedly allowed home team Koln to equalize from a penalty kick in the 81st minute of the match. If Bayern’s score remained the same, then regardless of Dortmund’s loss, they would still win the Bundesliga title.

Many fans as well as players of Dortmund were jubilantly celebrating the favorable results for their team at that moment. However, in the 89th minute, substitute striker Musiala managed a high-class finish from outside the penalty area to help Bayern Munich regain the lead with a score of 2-1.

Borussia Dortmund put in great effort and managed to find an equalizing goal in the 90+6th minute of stoppage time. But it wasn’t enough for them to clinch the title, as Bayern Munich ultimately triumphed with a 2-1 victory over Koln after 95 minutes of breathless play, including stoppage time. Bayern Munich and Dortmund both finished with 71 points, but Bayern won the Bundesliga championship due to a superior goal difference.
